Amnesty International has in a recent report pointed out that China has executed more persons in 2016 than all other countries together, even when capital punishments across the globe have been declining. Following an intense research expedition utilizing new accounts and court records, the watchdog asserts that the mainland has slayed thousands of persons. The figure in all other nations combined stands at one thousand and thirty two, a thirty seven percent decline from 2015.
The organization notes that China, together with Iran, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, have contributed to a staggering eighty seven percent of 2016 executions. It further details that hundreds of death sentences, some involving foreigners, seem to have been purposely excluded from the China’s judicial database; suggesting it’s without doubt an attempt to conceal the scale with which these atrocities are taking place. Nicholas Bequelin, East Asia director at the organization, mentions that no other country is enacting secrecy over executions besides China.
